Introduction
Warehousing and material handling (MH) cover a large number of very important topics in production/distribution systems and economics research, including the management of operations, the movement of products within the supply chain, the storage of products, among many others. Material handling and warehousing are critical topics of interest for industry, managers, practitioners, public and private research including academic researchbecause of various factors such as cost, efficiency, profit, environmental impact, risks, maintenance and safety.

The subject of this special issue is the development of advanced models, solutions, technologies, and applications in warehousing and material handling, i.e. models, methods, algorithms, tools, and new technologies for the design, management and optimization of systems and devices as well as the use of effective software and hardware solutions to move products within the supply chain and through production/distribution systems. The focus is not on technology per se but on the associated managerial and resource allocation problems based on integrated approaches and solutions.

The guest editors invite authors to submit papers of a theoretical, analytical, or empiricalnature that provide new evidence and insights for managers in industry. This issue isfocused on research, education, and applications. Case studies resulting from applications of innovative and original models and novel solution methods are also encouraged.

Coverage
The scope of this special issue covers all aspects of operations management and production economics of warehousing and material handling systems, including advanced research on decision models and tools for the design and optimization of such systems.

A list of suggested topics is provided below.

  • Storage and materials handling (design, planning, management, control and optimization)
  • Order picking or order fulfillment systems
  • Key performance indicators (KPI) and measures of efficiency
  • Economic evaluation, cost justification, and system optimization
  • Storage assignment and allocation
  • Warehousing and distribution systems
  • Distribution, distribution centers, facilities and equipment.
  • Warehousing and material handling for the supply chain
  • Warehousing and material handling in logistic networks
  • Management of special products categories (e.g. spare/service parts, food items and fresh products, perishable items, etc.)
  • Material flow management
  • Plant layout and location
  • Decision support systems and expert systemsfor MH and warehousing
  • Warehousing and inventory management
  • Warehousing/material handling for traceability and visibility
  • Integrated approaches to the design and management of MH and warehousing systems, covering multiple areas, e.g. sustainability, safety, ergonomics and human factors, reliability and maintenance, vehicle routing and transportation, risk management, etc.
  • Green and environmentally sustainable MH and warehousing
