The University of Bologna

The University of Bologna is recognized as the oldest university in the western world, and one of the largest in Italy. It is organized in a multi-campus structure divided into 23 schools, 68 departments and 5 operating sites (Bologna, Cesena, Forlì, Ravenna and Rimini) with an offer of 143 first-level degree courses, 98 specialized degree courses and 9 European specialization courses. Graduate studies are organized by 14 Doctoral Schools, which offer more than 300 graduate-level programs to approximately 1800 PhD students. The University of Bologna is one of most active Italian universities in research and technology transfer. At the national level: UNIBO ranks second for competitive research funding from the Italian Government. Furthermore, it is the primary research partner for Regione Emilia Romagna and for the regional branch of “Confindustria”, the Confederation of Italian industry, in a number of initiatives for advanced applied research, technology transfer and development of high-tech enterprises (including academic spin-offs). At the European level: UNIBO successfully participated in FP6 with a total of 114 projects (acting as coordinator in 14 of them) funded by the European Commission in the different specific programmes.
